Quick trip to Aldi
Happy Wednesday Club Members!
I know, I missed a newsletter yesterday, some technical difficulties and a slight error from my side but luckily it’s all sorted now!
So I thought I would treat you to an extra email this week ( just a short one ) and tell you about my quick trip to Aldi. And don’t worry, the missed newsletter will follow tomorrow.
Have you had a chance to check out those online wine shops I told you about? Head to our Home page to find your favourite wines, all in one place.
Trip to Aldi
You must have guessed by now I don’t usually shop in Aldi for wine. No particular reason really, it’s just I tend to visit places where I have a larger and more eclectic selection. But I am aware of their offers and the deals they have been recently pulling out and I must admit, I face the same questions as you do. Should I get that bottle of wine for only £5.50? Could that taste any good? How can they sell them so cheap compared to other supermarkets? There is a good explanation for it all: Aldi typically works with winemakers who use machine pickers as opposed to hand-picking, which ultimately saves time and cuts down on costs. They also partner with companies that own their vineyards, which means the grocer isn't paying any overhead to create the boozy product. And let’s not forget the fact that recently Aldi wines have gone viral on social media channels, especially on TikTok, which has helped the brand gain a huge popularity amongst the younger generation of wine drinkers.
So I thought it was about time I gave them a little visit and I picked up a few I think you should buy too!
Freeman's Bay New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc
An easy drinking, typical Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Less tropical aromas than most but it is full of ripe green apple, lime and gooseberry. The palate is very much faithful to these fruit characteristics. Notes of grass, citrus and a nice amount of acidity. It has quite a nice texture, a light body but a rather short finish. However, for only £6.79, this could be the perfect drink for those big family Christmas parties.
( Whilst at Aldi, I was told by a fellow shopper this one keeps selling out. That fellow shopper picked up 5 bottles )
Fleurie and other Beaujolais are ideal red wines to serve before dinner or with platters of cold meats, pâtés and sausage rolls. This one is very light, fruity and tannin-free. More fruit aromas on the nose, especially raspberries than on the palate but the typical freshness associated with this wine comes through nicely. This would also go well with salmon and tuna dishes. And the price has just been dropped to £6.99 for the original £9.49!
The two above would be my favourite choices from Aldi, as a start of an evening drink but there were a few others too that I would highly recommend, especially for the price!
Castollore Organic Prosecco £7.49
An extra dry Prosecco from Veneto, can’t go wrong with it. Welcoming sweet notes, peach and green apple.Suits any occasion.
Specially Selected Crémant Du Jura £8.99
Amazing value for money, this sparkling wine is certainly good enough to drink as an aperitif. It is also an ideal, less expensive alternative addition to any cocktail featuring champagne. Crisp green apple fruits, with a creamy touch and plenty of vibrant citrus.
Specially Selected Vinsobres £6.69
A very muscular, tannic wine, but beautifully balanced, the firm acidity of Vinsobres – the most northerly of the southern Rhône crus – lifting the intense red berry fruit profile. The Grenache (60%) is in power over the Syrah, delivering an appealing minerally freshness. Enjoy with any red meat.
Filos Estate Chardonnay £8.99
Now this is a firm favourite for the occasion! All the way from Macedonia, this is a lovely single-vineyard Chardonnay. Very youthful, with great intensity of green apple, white blossom and some nutty creaminess and citrus acidity. It should age well so stock up while you can, and enjoy a bottle with that roast chicken.
Next time…
Wine tasting session favourites, the amazing dinner with Chef and the red I couldn’t fit in last week!
Have a grape day!
